This audiobook is narrated using a digital voice based on Dr. Hunter T. Foote. It is half past seven in the morning and the whole house is awake at once. The kitchen turns into a choke point. A line forms at the bathroom, and one door swing blocks the corridor. Nobody is doing anything wrong. The layout is producing the friction. Shared Living By Design is a working method for reading a building the way a designer reads it, then changing it so it supports the people living there. Dr. Hunter T. Foote draws on more than a decade of opening and operating structured shared housing to show why small layout decisions carry outsized consequences once several adults share one entry, one kitchen, and two bathrooms. The book moves in four parts. It opens with the design principles that make group living work: flow, privacy, daily routine, supervision, and upkeep. It then takes on the code stack that governs shared housing, including the IRC-versus-IBC classification question, bedroom and capacity limits, and fire detection and sprinkler requirements. Part three is a walkthrough method: how to inspect a building, measure it without an architect, produce a clean working floor plan, and document what is fixed, what is flexible, and what is dead space. Part four is the optimization workflow itself, from maximizing bedroom space through balancing common areas to managing bathrooms, kitchens, and amenities against real use. Running underneath all of it is the question every operator eventually has to answer: how many people should actually live here, and what has to be true of the building before that number is safe and workable? The book treats that as a design decision with both ethical and financial weight, not a guess. Written for owners, operators, nonprofit leaders, and investors working with recovery homes, sober houses, transitional housing, student housing, and other group-living environments, whether improving a property already in service or evaluating one before purchase.
